European Union and what is next?
You can check in the previous post a very short history of Europe, and how we got to the modern European union.
What we need to understand is that the European union has done a amazing job when it comes to keeping peace for almost 80 years, but it also have a lot of problems. In the past it made sense that Europe should be at peace, and still does of course, but the European union must do much more, so that Europe can stay relevant on the world stage. Like I said in my first blog, the nations of Europe are becoming to small and weak to manifest a sort of power (I do not talk about a kind of conquering power, I am refiring to a Economical and political power that can represent and protect its citizens).
A common European Army, that could have the capacity to protect the entire continent, making the EU less reliant on the United States. A common European economy, with the same currency and taxes and interests, based on the very successful economy of the United States of America. A scenario like this would mean a more powerful European government representing the people, and a president of the Union. Basically Europe would become a federation, a federation is a unity of States that are governed by a federal government on external issues, but might decided to govern independently in internal issues. Of course there could be other plans for Europe such as forming one country with the level of integration as high or even higher the example set by our American friends.

This is Guy Verhofstadt, former leader of the ALDE group in the European parliament, now the group is called Renew Europe. Mr Guy is the biggest supporter of the European.
